It's normal to lose some hair every day.  The number of strands lost varies, but on average it’s around 100 each day.  To keep your hair at the same volume, strands must be replaced at the same rate at which it is lost.

Amongst the first signs of hair thinning that you might notice are more hairs than usual left in the hairbrush after brushing or in the shower after shampooing.   When styling your hair you may also notice areas of thinning, such as a wider parting or thinning at the crown.  If you wear a pony tail you may find that this is thinner too.

Yes, hair loss can affect everybody, and there can be various causes.  Women can be affected by female pattern baldness, which results in extreme shedding of hair, particularly at the front.  This can be an inherited tendency, or caused by aging, hormonal changes including pregnancy, or some medications.

Other common causes of hair loss in women include alopecia, traction alopecia, cancer treatments, telogen effluvium and trichotillomania.

Telogen effluvium is a common cause of hair loss which causes the sudden shedding of hair from all over the scalp. It is the result of many individual hair follicles across the scalp entering their resting phase simultaneously, which causes shedding of the hair and thinning.

The condition can be caused by nutritional deficiencies, extreme psychological stress, hormonal imbalances such as during pregnancy or menopause.  Traumatic circumstances such as major surgery, severe illness, accidents or poisoning can also cause telogen effluvium.

The condition will eventually clear, usually after about 6 months or when you have dealt with the underlying root cause.

Alopecia is one of the most widely known medical terms used to describe hair loss, but it can come in many forms and have many causes.

Alopecia areata occurs when the body's immune system attacks the hair follicles, causing the hair to shed.  Other types of hair loss condition can include scarring alopecia (which is an inflammatory condition which permanently destroys the hair follicles), anagen effluvium (caused by chemotherapy) and telogen effluvium (often caused by severe stress, but also nutritional deficiencies and hormone imbalances).
